Spoon Theory is a way of describing how much physical, mental, and emotional energy you have available to get through your day.
Imagine beginning each day with a limited number of spoons. Every activity may use some of them—getting dressed, making a meal, going to work, providing care, running errands, having a difficult conversation, or even concentrating when you're tired.
Some days you may begin with plenty of spoons. Other days, you may start with only a few.
And when the spoons are gone, you can't simply decide to have more.
Spoon Theory can be especially helpful for people living with chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, fatigue, or other conditions that can make energy unpredictable.
💜 Having fewer spoons doesn't mean you aren't trying. It means your available energy has limits.
You only have so many spoons today. You get to decide where they go.
Some days you may have plenty of energy. Other days, even everyday tasks may take more out of you than expected. Paying attention to your spoons can help you make choices about where to use the energy you have.
🔎 Notice
Check in with yourself. How many spoons do you feel like you have right now?
⚖️ Prioritize
Choose what matters most today. Not everything has to be done at once.
⏸️ Pace
Take breaks before you run out. Rest doesn't have to wait until you're exhausted.
🖐️ Be Kind to Yourself
Honor your limits without guilt. Having fewer spoons today doesn't make you less capable, valuable, or worthy.
💜 You are more than your spoons.
Your energy may change from day to day—and that's okay. The goal isn't to use every spoon. The goal is to take care of yourself while using the ones you have.
